Blessings this Eastertide. The Hump Day messages during these 50 days of Easter will be poetry. The intention is reflection on resurrection.
On Easter Day we explored an aspect of resurrection as being hope that is indestructible. We can have different experiences about what resurrection is throughout our lifetimes.
I hope you can make time to take in these poems and discover for yourself and talk with others about what resurrection might be for you, at least for now.
The following poem is one inspired by my young son who, one afternoon as we walked toward the car after a soccer game, saw a dandelion. His dad and I were, at that point, newly divorced.
Dandelion
Spring. Soccer. Walking.
Inhale. Exhale.
Socks pulled over his knees.
Shin guards protrude under like a blanketed tortoise shell.
His legs are protected.
What about his heart?
He bends down,
All of five years old;
And gently plucks the flower,
the one we try to kill;
the one we often kill.
He inhales steadily,
Closes his eyes, whispers:
“I want my family to live together again.”
Then, a brief pause and peaceful smile.
Hope entrusted.
With the softness of Lambs Ear
He releases his little breath;
Which releases the tiny seeds,
Bearers of hope,
Yoked now with precious desire;
And the wind,
Otherwise unnoticeable,
Carries his deepest desire onward.
They will make more flowers;
the ones we try to kill;
the ones we often kill,
That still…
Cannot… will not… ever fully die.
