Edith Bergay, previous parishioner

January 10, 2024

When Jim and I moved from Herndon in April 2020, we stayed in touch through the Epiphany newsletters. North Carolina provided us with a path for retirement, lower taxes and Jim with specialized medical care at Duke University Hospital. Jim died March 10, 2021.  The weekend of Dec 16, 2023, I was blessed to be in NOVA. It marked my third Christmas without my Jimmy. My grief journey includes doing things which we shared and cherished. He sang with The WASHINGTON Chorus for 8 seasons and attending their Candlelight Concert which he performed, was what we did. On occasion he would play his trumpet at an Epiphany service. For me. the journey is as if l he is with me.  Knowing that the Hyperthermia Shelter was that weekend gave me the courage to pack up Jim’s winter coats and bring them to Epiphany. His things would be used well. Prior to this, I did not have the emotional strength to send away anything he wore. Learning about the contemplative prayer service would be the hug for my soul I desperately craved.  Lots of tears, prayers, a thoughtful meal and seeing three Epiphany members I knew were cherished gifts.

I brought a friend who attends St. Christopher’s Episcopal in Springfield with me. This too was also a blessing. I could share the love of the Epiphany family. My friend became a widow in June 2023 and the concept of a “Blue Christmas service” captured the hearts of both of us.  Healing continued that evening.

At the conclusion of the night I felt loved, cared for and a tender sense of God’s Peace.

Staying in touch with my Epiphany church family continues to be a blessing.

If ever in the Wake Forest area, my church home is now St John’s Episcopal.
