In On the Ground Floor

An Idiom well-suited for CYFM

“In on the ground floor” is a common idiom. It means getting involved with something from the very start, from the beginning. It connotates a kind of “lucky break” or a great opportunity. Most often it is used for business opportunities in some form.

And it could be said that our current time at Epiphany is like “getting in on the ground floor.” As we continue our move further out of COVID and to re-imagine our place as God’s people in the world, opportunities for life-giving discovery and connection are expanding.

What I could not help but notice was how much this idiom fits for our Children & Youth Family Ministries (CYFM) as I recalled the countless times I have seen our Children & Youth Family Minister, Dana sitting on the ground preparing for an activity or lesson for our young ones. Then I noticed it again with our teachers in the recent Sunday School video.

Maybe this sitting on the floor preparing to be with kids or actually being with kids, exploring, wondering, and discovering together is another beautiful application of the idiom. It is coming down close to where God too, perhaps sat down and created. From the earthy ground, this is the source of our very selves, as one of our sacred creation stories tells how we were lovingly molded and held. What a reminder: we were held in the tender hands of God. Isn’t that compelling? Isn’t it still true as we grow? We are held. Who wouldn’t want to be in on that ground floor?

In Peace, Dina+
